BROMLEY SMITH PREPS LBJ FOR MEETING WITH FOREIGN INTELLIGENCE ADVISORY BOARD
Washington, D.C. (JFK ASSASSINATION) On October 27, 2017, President Donald Trump authorized release of more than 2800 files on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
The President said...
"The American public expects -- and deserves -- its government to provide as much access as possible to the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records so that the people may finally be fully informed about all aspects of this pivotal event."
Today we will discuss Record #177-10002-10084, a memorandum written by Bromley Smith* for President Lyndon B. Johnson preparing him for an afternoon meeting with the Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board**.
Mr. Smith explained that Clark Clifford***, board chairman, would introduce the members of the board to the President and "explain the work of the board."
Bromley Smith wrote...
"He...(will)...emphasize...how to improve counterintelligence activities, including (the)...revision of existing procedures to prevent the Russians from penetrating our intelligence organizations."
Smith added that the FIAB was asked by President John F. Kennedy to "dig deeply into how the intelligence agencies operated in the Cuban situation."
Smith also listed three questions President Johnson could ask the board.
*Bromley K. Smith was born in Muscatine, Iowa & joined the US State Dept as a Foreign Service officer in 1940. BKS was appointed to the National Security Council in 1953 & served as council secretary under JFK & LBJ. He retired in 1980 but continued as a consultant.
**FIAB, originally known as the President's Board of Consultants on Foreign Intelligence Activities & created in 1956 by President Eisenhower. Jimmy Doolittle and Joe Kennedy were members of the first board. JFK renamed it the FIAB & George W. Bush renamed it again, The President's Intelligence Activities Board.
***James Killian was chairman during President Kennedy's administration.
