Fort Worth, Texas (JFKASSASSINATION) On the morning of November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy complimented then Texas Congressman Jim Wright by saying, in the last speech he was to deliver,
"I'm glad to be here in Jim Wright's city. He's contributed to its' growth and he speaks for Fort Worth. He speaks for the country."
Congressman Wright earned JFK's praise because his invitation for the President to visit Fort Worth helped "boost the chances for General Dynamics to build the F-111 fighter." The company was awarded the contract.
In 1979, Jim Wright became Majority Leader of the House of Representatives and served as Speaker of the House from 1987 to 1989.
After retiring from Congress, JW taught a course for 20 years at Texas Christian University titled "Congress and the Presidents."
