THIS NATION HAS TOSSED ITS CAP OVER THE WALL OF SPACE

On Thursday, November 21, 1963, with the 1964 Presidential campaign on the horizon, JFK & Mrs. Kennedy made a political trip to Texas.

The President & 1st Lady were to tour five cities: San Antonio, Houston, Fort Worth, Dallas & Austin.

The purpose of this trip was to "get votes & raise money".

Texas is a key state in Presidential races because of its high number of electoral votes.  In 1960, the Kennedy-Johnson ticket won Texas by a narrow margin.

In San Antonio, LBJ & Governor John Connally & his wife, Nellie, welcomed JFK & Jackie along with Senator Ralph Yarborough.

One of the concerns JFK had about Texas was a "feud" between Connally & Yarborough which he hoped to smooth over. The party proceeded to Brooks Air Force Base by motorcade.

At Brooks Air Force Base, the President spoke at the dedication of the Aerospace Medical Health Center.

JFK said:

"This Nation has tossed its cap over the wall of space, and we have no choice but to follow it.  With the vital help of this Aerospace Medical Center....we will climb this wall with safety and with speed--and we shall then explore the wonders on the other side."
