THE TIPPIT MURDER IV

June 17, 2012

WHITEWASH-the report on the Warren Report by Harold Weisberg, Chapter 6: The Tippit Murder IV

Knoxville, Tennessee (JFKASSASSINATION) Today this blog concludes our report on Chapter 6 of Harold Weisberg's book "Whitewash--the report on the Warren Report", published in 1965.

The title of Chapter 6 is The Tippit Murder.

Harold Weisberg makes an interesting point:

"If Oswald had shot both (JFK) & Tippit, the one time he was really clear began within a minute or two of the 2nd shooting.

He was unseen for almost a half-hour.

When he had made his getaway, so far as he knew & the evidence shows, why should he have bottled himself up in the....theatre?

The answer of the Report is that he wanted to get caught.

Then why run?"

Mr. Weisberg concludes this chapter with an introduction to his ensuing chapters.

He writes:

"The several chapters of the next section....will spotlight what happened to Oswald during the less than 2 days he was a police prisoner."

Harold reminds us that these 2 days would end with the death of Oswald in the basement of Dallas Police Headquarters & because of that, as we know, there would be no trial....no legal solution to the case...and so LEE HARVEY OSWALD "remains the lone suspect."

  1. Here's what drives me nuts about this.

Either you are going to (1) try to get away with it and have some plan of escape, or (2) you are going to take responsibility and either use the assassination to make some kind of statement or otherwise go out in a blaze of glory in a gunbattle.

Oswald, we would be led to believe, tried to do both (1) and (2). .

What is the point of trying to (poorly) hide a rifle that can be easily traced to you?

Why CARRY that fake ID that traces the gun to you on your person on the day of the assassination just to make it easy?

Why take the time to hide the rifle that can be traced directly back to you and simultaneously try to establish an alibi by hanging around the cafeteria on the second floor, staring down a cop, then getting a coke, and directing a reporter to a phone?

Then why all of a sudden switch gears, run 7 blocks to get a bus which stops right in front of the building, get off the bus in front of a bus station but not go inside and take a bus out of town, take a cab to your house so you can get a pistol (which you didn't remember to bring with yo to work for the shootout but now decide that you need), wander around aimlessly for 40 minutes in your own neighborhood and shoot a cop to boot just to make it interesting, (also emptying your pistol cartridges right at the scene), then duck into a movie theater without buying a ticket and sit there while a dragnet is going on all around you that is inevitably going to find you?

What kind of an idiot would do that?

Oswald may have been many things but an idiot is not one of them. He learned Russian fluently while in the military supposedly just from records. He neatly parried hours of police questioning after his arrest. He was a smart guy.

What makes more sense is that Oswald was somehow involved in an assassination plot without knowing the full scope, or possibly even that the President was going to be shot, suddenly realizes that he is being framed, and tries to improvise an escape.

  2. Oswald may well have been involved in the plot and he may have realized that he was being framed, but he did not seem to comprehend the danger he posed to others involved in the plot. When Dallas Detective Jim Leavelle cautioned Oswald about what to do in case of trouble, Oswald said, "Nobodys gonna shoot me!"
